The Seahawks vs Broncos Rare Regular Season Rematch | Will there be any surprises?

Super Bowl IV – Kansas City Chiefs (23) vs Minnesota Vikings (7)

The rematch was scheduled quickly for Week 1 of the 1970 season, with the game being played in Minneapolis. The Vikings would win 27-10. The Vikings would then go on to become the top seed in the NFC, while the Chiefs failed to make the playoffs.
  • Outcome of Rematch:  Super Bowl loser wins
Super Bowl XI – Oakland Raiders (32) vs Minnesota Vikings (14)

Playing during the '77 season, Week 13, the Raiders again dominated the Vikings. Playing at the Coliseum, Oakland jumped to a quick 21-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, winning by a final score of 35-13. Though the Raiders had 3 turnovers, the Vikings had a staggering 7, including 3 interceptions by backup QB Tommy Kramer. Both teams would go on to lose their respective conference championship games.
  • Outcome of Rematch:  Super Bowl winner wins
Super Bowl XIII – Pittsburgh Steelers (35) vs Dallas Cowboys (31)

The rematch was set for Week 9 of the 1979 season, and it ended with completely different results. The Steelers prevailed again with a 14-3 score that was more in line with their famous Steel Curtain. The Cowboys made the playoffs but lost in the second round, while the Steelers defended their crown successfully, beating the Rams in Super Bowl XIV.
  • Outcome of Rematch:  Super Bowl winner wins
  • The Steelers were established in '33 (So were the Eagles)
Super Bowl XXVII – Dallas Cowboys (52) vs Buffalo Bills (17)

The rematch was played during Week 2 of the 1993 season, with the Bills defeating the Cowboys at Texas Stadium. Buffalo's defense took over quickly, as they limited QB Troy Aikman to only 297 yards with two picks, and took advantage of Emmitt Smith's absence. A late field goal sealed the 13-10 victory for the Bills. After the loss, the Cowboys dropped to a 0-2 record, only to become one of the 4 teams that made the Super Bowl despite starting with this record. Of course, their victims were again the Bills in Super Bowl XXVIII.
  • Outcome of Rematch:  Super Bowl loser wins
Super Bowl XXXI – Green Bay Packers (35) vs New England Patriots (21)

The rematch was set for Week 9 of the 1997 season, and it was played in New England's Foxboro stadium. The Pats took a quick 10-7 lead in the second quarter, but the Packers took it over from there and scored an unanswered 21 points that sealed the 28-10 victory in the end. New England again was careless with the ball, turning it over 4 times. The Patriots would advance to the playoffs and lose in the divisional round, while the Packers returned to the Super Bowl, where they lost against John Elway and the Broncos.
  • Outcome of Rematch:  Super Bowl winner wins
Tomorrow's game of Denver Broncos at Seattle Seahawks will mark the sixth time there has been a Super Bowl rematch in the regular season. If it is to follow the established pattern, the Seahawks should win tomorrows game. It should be noted that the coach of the last game under such circumstances, Packers vs Patriots of 1997, featured two coaches who have since worked for the Seattle Seahawks; Michael Holmgren and Pete Carroll.

What is interesting about tomorrow's rare rematch, is that it will not be on primetime television. Also, with the rate of NFL PsyOps are currently occurring, I'm wondering if we're in for a Week 3 surprise...

Tomorrow's date will be Sunday, September 21, 2014, or 9/21/14.
  • 9/21/14 = 9+21+14 = 44
    • Hopefully there isn't a third day of incidents at the White House either...
